Abstract
Extrahepatic portal hypertension is a relatively rare disease in children. The most frequent cause of extrahepatic portal hypertension is portal vein thrombosis. The main clinical manifestations are hematemesis, melena, ascites and splenomegaly.
We experienced a case of extrahepatic portal hypertension due to portal vein thrombosis in a 10 year old girl who had complained of intermittent hematemesis and melena for 3 years.
Thrombosis of the portal vein was confirmed by selective celiac arteriography. The thrombosis and portal hypertension were controlled by splenorenal shunt operation. We report this case with a brief of related literature.
